Chimpanzee Trekking Experience in Kibale National Park : Established in 1932, Kibale National Park spans 795 square kilometres in western Uganda. It is one of Uganda’s national parks with the highest concentration of primates in the world, and it contains a dozen habituated chimpanzee groups. This is considered one of the best places in all of East Africa to trek chimpanzees. The Chamburo trailhead area in Kibale is one of the best locations for chimpanzee trekking in all of Africa, and it is a vast alternative to the overcrowded torturous conditions found within the Nyungwe Forest National Park in neighbouring Rwanda. Kibale Forest covers rainy forests, swamp vegetation, papyrus, and grasslands. Kibale National Park is a small but famous Ugandan national park located 300 kilometers southwest of Kampala. It straddles the equator in the central part of the country. Uganda’s forests are home to 13 confirmed different types of primates, accounting for 60% of the total population, with 6 of these species primarily found in Kibale. These specific monkeys are the Chimpanzees, the Olive Baboon, the varied Colobus, L’Hoest’s Monkey, the Red-tailed Monkey, and the Black and White Colobus.
On night forest walks, usually at night, when you are staying at one of the eco-lodges in or near Kibale during a Uganda Safari, you get to experience the animals of the night: bush babies, pottoes, Thomas Galagos, the pottos, tree pangolins, and a variety of owls, amphibians, snakes, and reptiles. The nocturnal walk is a unique wildlife experience that exposes primates to two-level forests of complex vegetation around Kanyanchu.

Trekking chimpanzees usually takes around 2 to 4 hours. There are strict rules and regulations that visitors follow to minimise disturbance to chimpanzees, and they are told in the briefing section before they embark on the trekking journey. It’s important to know that there is a certain number of people in a group allowed to trek, and interactions are monitored by guides to ensure the chimpanzee’s wellbeing.
