Bwindi impenetrable national park is located in south western Uganda covering an area of 321 square kilometers and lies at the elevation range of 1,160 meters – 2,607 meters above the sea level, because of the high altitude the park is covered with mist and it is dominated by Uganda’s oldest and most biologically diverse rainforests dating back to 25000 years ago. 

Bwindi impenetrable national park a thriving home for mountain gorillas is divide into four sectors habiting mountain gorillas, these sectors include Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Mountain gorillas in Bwindi impenetrable national park are over 600 individuals and there are 18 habituated gorillas including Mucunguzi gorilla family, Bikyingi gorilla family, Busingye gorilla family, Kahungye gorilla family, Bweza gorilla family, Mishaya gorilla family, Nshongi gorilla family, Kyaguriro gorilla family, Oruzogo gorilla family, Bitukura gorilla family, Christmas gorilla family, Bushaho gorilla family, Nkuringo gorilla family, Katwe gorilla family, Rushegura gorilla family, Habinyanja gorilla family and Mubare gorilla family

The 18 habituated mountain gorilla families are habituated while on mountain gorilla trekking safaris in Bwindi impenetrable national park and trekking one of the families offers a memorable experience. Bwindi impenetrable national park is under the administration of the Uganda Wildlife Authority a government body in charge of governing all Uganda’s national reserves and parks.

Mountain gorilla trekking rules and regulations 

Mountain gorilla trekking is the major safari activity offered in Bwindi impenetrable national park, for the conservation of the mountain gorillas this activity is governed by a set of rules and regulations. These include

BEFORE YOU SET OUT

  • Do not visit the gorillas if you have a cold or other infectious illness.
  • Minimum age for tracking gorillas is 15 years.
  • Human waste should be buried 30cm (12”) deep
  • Maximum number of visitors is eight persons per gorilla group

WHEN YOU ARE WITH THE GORILLAS

  • Maintain a 7m (21ft) distance from the gorilla
  • Smoking, eating and drinking are not permitted on the tour
  • If you must sneeze or cough cover your face and turn away from
  • the gorillas, as they can catch coughs and colds from humans
  • Visits are limited to one hour per gorilla group per day
  • Do not use flash photography
