Terror and security status of Uganda : On 16 November 2021, two explosions occurred in the central business district of Kampala. This resulted in fatalities and injuries. You should avoid the area where the explosions occurred, monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities. We now advise you ‘Reconsider your need to travel’ (level 3 of 4) to Kampala due to the increased risk of terrorist attacks.

Terrorism is a threat in Uganda however, the Uganda security is on lookout to protect the people of Uganda and their visitors although the Somali-based terrorists have kept on threatened to attack interests of East African governments supporting the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). This threat is also on Kenya, Ethiopia and Burundi. This has woken up the security bodies of Uganda including the Uganda Police and the Uganda’s People Defence Force (UPDF) to increase security arrangements in public places, borders and at the international airport. Below are some recently faced terror attacks in Uganda

  • On 16 November 2021, there were two explosions in central Kampala and near Parliament.
  • On 25 October 2021, an explosion occurred on a passenger bus travelling on the Kampala-Masaka highway.
  • On 23 October 2021, an explosion at a restaurant in Kampala resulted in several injuries.

Therefore, travelling coming to Uganda must expect body, car and luggage checks when travelling, especially in Kampala as it is the main threat since it is the capital city with the highest population. Some of the possible targets for terror attacks including the following;

  • Tourist areas, hotels, resorts restaurants, bars, clubs, marketplaces, markets and shopping centers
  • schools, places of worship, outdoor and political events
  • airports, bus terminals, public transport and government buildings

However, with this background, the security forces increased their security measures to protect the people. However, below are some of the security measures to protect yourself from terrorism:

  • consider the level of security at venues you’re visiting
  • be alert in crowded places and monitor local media
  • pay close attention to your personal security
  • take official warnings seriously and follow instructions
  • Report any suspicious items or activities to police.
  • If there is a terrorist attack, leave the affected area immediately if it’s safe to do so.
  • Avoid the affected area afterwards as there may be further attacks.

Security is usually required when gorilla trekking due to the risk of armed attack. For your safety, don’t take gorilla trekking tours that cross into the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Petty crime and violent crime can happen. Always be alert. Don’t walk in isolated areas or along dark streets at night.

The security situation in the neighboring DRC is very unstable and volatile. You may be kidnapped or caught up in violence. If you’re travelling near the border, seek professional security advice.
