What Is The Largest Gorilla Family In Uganda? Nshongi Gorilla family is known to be the largest gorilla family, which is among the 10 habituated gorilla groups found in Bwindi impenetrable national park. Bwindi impenetrable national park is located in the Southwestern region of Uganda in Kanungu district and it was named as a UNESCO World Heritage and established as a national park in 1994. This national park is famously known for being a good destination where tourists can best go for gorilla trekking activities. More so, Bwindi impenetrable national park is considered to be among the smallest national parks in Uganda because it covers a total surface area of about 321 square kilometers and it is a home to over 400 endangered mountain gorilla species that live within this park as their natural habitat. This national park shares boarders with other countries like; Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Nshongi gorilla group is found within the Rushaga sector where tourists can be able to sight see at large numbers of mountain gorilla species. These endangered mountain gorilla species are commonly known to be the largest primate species, which attract many tourists who travel from many parts of the world to come to Uganda on their gorilla trekking safari. More so, the unique and interesting thing about these species is that they share 98% of their DNA with human beings. Nshongi gorilla group was officially opened in 2009 and it is considered as the largest because it is made of 36 habituated mountain gorilla species and these species have a unique character due to their large size. A dominant silver back named as Nshongi who led well and helped its members to live in great harmony led this gorilla family. More so, Nshongi gorilla family also had three silverbacks and around seven black blacks had good characters and lived together without fighting each other.

Nshongi gorilla group/ family got its name due the strategic location because it was located near a river where the first group of the endangered mountain gorilla species were first spotted. More so, the Nshongi gorilla group refers to the deep colour of the river because it resembles honey and it is known to be a Rukiga word, which means honey, and in Rukiga, it is pronounced as “Omushongi Gwoboki”. Hence the name of this gorilla family was also given the the dominant silver back who became the leader of this group and he was names Nshongi. However, later in 2010, this group was separated in two families but fortunately, the group remained with only 26 members, which included; 10 members that managed to form a family with the Mishaya silverback and four silverbacks.
