The 6 days Rwanda chimpanzees and wildlife safari will take you Akagera national park where you will view various animal species such as elephants, buffaloes, zebras, waterbucks, bushbucks, giraffes, lions, leopards, impala, elands, hippos, Nile crocodiles among others during the game drive and boat cruise on Lake Ihema the second biggest lake in Rwanda. You will also visit Nyungwe national park where you will participate in an interesting canopy walk and chimpanzee trekking activity which gives you an opportunity to spend one hour with the chimpanzees in their natural habitat.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1 of the 6 days Rwanda chimpanzees and wildlife safari

Arrival and transfer to a hotel, depending on the time of arrival on the first day of the 6 days Rwanda chimpanzees and wildlife safari you will be welcomed by our driver guide who will brief you about your safari and then transfer to a hotel in Kigali for an dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe national park

After breakfast on the second day of the 6 days Rwanda chimpanzees and wildlife safari, you will be picked up by your driver guide to start the journey to Nyungwe national park. The national park is located in south western part of Rwanda and its famous for harboring primates like chimpanzees, baboons, monkeys among others. On your way you will have a stopover at the King’s Palace where you will views the long horned Inyambo cattle at the back of the palace which descended from the King’s heard and played an important role during ceremonies in honor of the King. You will also visit the Museum in Nyanza where you will view different collections of Africa’s tradition materials. After the tour at the King’s palace and Museum you will have en-route lunch and then proceed with the journey to Nyungwe national park and upon arrival you will check into the lodge, have dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk

Chimpanzee trekking, after an early breakfast on the third day of the 6 days Rwanda chimpanzees and wildlife safari you will meet up with your driver guide to transfer to the park headquarters for the briefing about the rules and regulations of chimpanzee trekking. After the briefing you will be allocated a chimpanzee group to trek, a park guide who is well conversant with trails in the forest and start trekking. Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe national park takes about 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on where they are located because they like to move deep into the forest in search of food. Once the chimpanzees are found you will be allowed to spend one hour with them in their natural environment and during the one hour you will learn more about their lifestyle, behaviors, watch chimpanzees breastfeed, feed, take photos and record the moments to show people back home. After the one hour encounter with the chimpanzees you will trek back to the park headquarters meet up with your driver guide and drive back to the lodge for lunch.

Canopy walk, after lunch you will go for a canopy walk which is one of the most adventurous and exciting activity carried out in the park. Nyungwe national park is however the only national park in East Africa that offers this amazing and thrilling activity and it was opened in 2010. The canopy walk starts at Uwinka Visitor’s Center going through huge trees across the steep and deep valleys filled with thick forest which takes about 2 hours. During the canopy walk you will have spectacular views of the forest canopy, birds, butterflies, primates like blue monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, tree species among others which give you unforgettable and lifetime memories. After the canopy walk you will trek back to the starting point, meet up with your driver guide and drive back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Transfer to Akagera national park

After breakfast on the fourth day of the 6 days Rwanda chimpanzees and wildlife safari, you will check out of the lodge and meet up with your driver guide to transfer to Akagera national park. The journey takes about 7 hours drive and on your way you will have a stopover for en-route lunch and great views of the landscape, terraced farmlands, rolling hills, traditional homesteads among others. Upon arrival in the park you will continue to check into the lodge for an evening relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Morning game drive and afternoon boat cruise

Morning game drive, on the fifth day of the 6 days Rwanda chimpanzees and wildlife safari you will have an early breakfast and meet up with your driver guide to go for a morning game drive in the park. During the game drive you should look out for animals like topi, elands, oribi, giraffes, roam antelopes, waterbucks, zebras, buffaloes, elephants, warthogs, bushbucks, wild dogs, impalas, duikers, Bohor reedbuck, sitatungas, klipspringer, black tailed mongoose, bush pigs, if you are lucky you will watch predators like lions, leopards, hyenas among others. you will also view primates like vervet monkeys, olive baboons, blue monkeys, bush babies, bird species like lesser kestrel, hornbills, Hadada ibis, cattle egret, grey backed fiscal, pied crow, long crested eagle among others, enjoy great views of the beautiful landscape, sunrise, flora, and take beautiful pictures. After the game drive you will drive back to the lodge for lunch.

Boat cruise, after lunch you will go for an amazing boat cruise on Lake Ihema which is the biggest fresh water lake in Akagera national park. The boat cruise is done in schedules and the afternoon boat ride starts at around 3:30 pm and takes about 2 to 3 hours. During the boat ride you will chill, relax and enjoy the breeze, take great pictures and have spectacular views of the landscape, hills, large concentrations of hippos and Nile crocodiles in water. cruise near animal species like elephants, buffaloes, warthogs, waterbuck, sitatungas in the swamp and along the water shores, aquatic bird species like the prehistoric shoebill stork, papyrus Gonolek, African wattled plover, pied and malachite kingfisher, cormorants, bee-eaters, African fish eagle, open billed stork, herons, egrets among others. After the boat cruise you will meet up with your driver guide to transfer to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Departure to Kigali

After breakfast on the last day of the 6 days Rwanda chimpanzees and wildlife safari, you will check out of the lodge and meet up with your guide to transfer to Kigali for a city tour. During the city tour you will visit Kigali Genocide memorial center, craft centers where they sell souvenirs, art pieces, handmade crafts among others, visit Kimironko market where you will interact with the local vendors in the market. After the Kigali city tour you will go for a buffet in one of the restaurants and later transfer to Kigali international airport for your next flight.
