Attractions in Northern Uganda : Northern Uganda as the name states is the part of the country (Uganda) that is up north of the Uganda’s capital Kampala. The region is about 167 to 289 plus kilometers from the Kampala and has 4 regions with 40 districts.

The regions in this area are West Nile, Acholi, Lango and Karamoja region.
The districts include but are not limited to: – Arua, Maracha, Koboko, Yumbe, Moyo, Adjumani, Gulu, Kitgum, Pader, Lamwo, Agago, Otuke, Oyam, Amuru, Nwoya, Lira, Apac, Kole, Dokolo, Amolatar, Moroto, Nakapiripirit, Amudat, Kotido, Abim, Kaabong, Napak and others.
Among the many tourists that visit Uganda yearly about 10 – 15% of those visit northern Uganda for an experience of the region and the attractions of the regions.
However, since the region is not as popular as the other tourists’ regions, most people wonder what attractions are in the region.
In this article we look at some attractions, people look forward to in northern Uganda.
You should note that Northern Uganda like the many other places in the region can be visited any time of the year. It’s true though people like to visit places in the dry season, but any time you decide to visit Northern Uganda, you have a time of your life we promise you.
The most popular attractions are the over 100 mammal species and over 450 bird species in Kidepo national Park.
Kipedo national park is the main park in northern Uganda. The park is one of the most visited attractions destinations in the region. As stated, the park has both mammals and birds that include but not limited to lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, giraffes, zebras, Impalas and many more. For the birds its mainly the African fish eagle, grey crowned crane, Marabou stock and many more. The park also has the season kidepo river that is also an attraction and the flora that is a mixture of lush green and acacia wood vegetation.
The mammals and birds can also be seen in Murchison Falls National Park; which is also considered a park in north west Uganda. On top of the animals, birds, and flora this park also has the Victoria falls on the Nile River that are spectacular to look at and also hike.

Pian Upe wildlife reserve and Ajai Wildlife Reserve, the reserves are not as popular as the parks but they also have a number unique fauna with Ajai famous for its huge population of Crocodiles and hippos.
The region is also gifted by picturesque waterfalls and rocks notably the Aruu falls on the border of Gulu and Kitgum. A visit to these falls gives you a refreshing experience where you experience the water fall breeze, get the opportunity to picnic at the falls and rock climbing on the slippery rocks. visiting the Aruu falls is a good top up activity for all who visit the area.
You can also challenge yourself by choosing to visit either Mount Moroto or Mount Kadam or both. where you take a hike up the peaks to conquer the mountains and for breathtaking views of the surroundings. Since these mountains are not that strenuous to conquer, they can be hiked as a top up activity to all your other Uganda safari activities in the region.
Other attractions are the historical and cultural centers in the region that include:- the Gulu Museum that’s has a wide range of artifacts that showcase the Acholi history and culture. There is also the Gulu kabaka palace, which is believed to have been a resting place for the kabaka’s in the oldened days., it’s a place where they took their vacations. There’s also Fort Patiko that has the remains of the colonial-era in the area among other things.
