30 Days Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, & Tanzania Safari features visiting Volcanoes national park and Nyungwe forest national park in Rwanda. Volcanoes national park is Rwanda’s home of the endangered mountain gorillas, Golden monkeys and the Volcanoes hiking experience on Mount Bisoke, Karisimbi and Dian fossey on Mount Karisoke. The park is located on Virunga Mountains shared with Uganda and Congo. Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes national park is different from other parks because it is quite easier to find the gorillas even with the steep hills of Virunga Mountains. There are about 10 habituated gorilla families for visitors to see. In Uganda, the 30 Days safari features visit to Mgahinga national park, Bwindi Impenetrable national park, Queen Elizabeth national park, Kibale national park, and Murchison falls national park. Bwindi Impenetrable national park inhabits half of the remaining endangered mountain gorillas in the world and it is divided into 4 sectors including; Buhoma sector which is the oldest trekking sector, Rushaga sector which has the largest number of gorilla families, Ruhija sector and finally Nkuringo sector. Bwindi forest also shelters some species of mammals including the forest elephants and the different species of antelopes. Queen Elizabeth national park is Uganda’s second largest national park with tree climbing lions as its main tourist attraction however the park has a lot more activities to explore depending in the time spent in the park.  Kibale national park is Africa’s best chimpanzee trekking destination with guaranteed best views of the chimpanzees and other 12 existing primates in the park. It is also a home to 138 species of birds, 250 tree species and 60 species of forest wildlife including forest elephants, bushbucks, warthogs, giant forest hogs and buffaloes. Murchison falls National Park is the largest national park with a variety of wildlife life with the most powerful waterfall in Africa along the River Nile, located in the Southern of Uganda and they offer the best experience of the big five game including the rhinos in Ziwa rhino sanctuary.

In Kenya, this trip features Lake Naivasha national park and Hell’s gate national park – home to the flamingos and rhinos, Masai Mara national reserve which is the best wildlife destination in Kenya for the big five game and the great wildebeest migration that takes place every year, Serengeti national park – Africa and East Africa’s best wildlife destination, the park is divided by River Mara from the Masai Mara national reserve in Kenya and has plenty of wildlife to view. Amboseli national park is one of Kenya’s most popular parks to view large herds of elephants up close. Nature lovers can explore five different habitats ranging from the dried up bed of Lake Amboseli, wetlands with sulphur springs, savannah and woodlands.

In Tanzania, this safari involves visiting Lake Manyara national park, Tarangire national park, Ngorongoro conservation area and Serengeti national park. Lake Manyara national park which is the closest national park to Arusha and it is home to the tree climbing lions and other wildlife. Ngorongoro conservation area where you will find the great Ngorongoro Crater which is about 600 meters deep with all kinds of animals. Ngorongoro crater has a large but shallow alkaline lake called Lake Magadi with a large number of flamingo birds, hippos and other water birds.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – City tour

Upon arrival in Kigali at 1 pm on day 1 of 30 Days Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, & Tanzania Safari, you will be welcomed by our company representative who will also be your safari guide. Connect for a Kigali city tour and visit the Kigali genocide memorial, Rwanda Art Museum and the presidential palace museum where you will learn more about the history of Rwanda. Enjoy en-route lunch, dinner and overnight stay at Des Mille Collins Hotel – Mid-range option/Step Town Motel for budget option/Kigali Marriot Hotel for luxury 

Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest national park – Canopy walkway

After your early breakfast, embark on your journey to Nyungwe forest national park which is a 6-7 hours’ drive from Kigali with en-route early lunch. Proceed to the park and connect for the 2 pm canopy walk experience. You will go on a walking trail that will take you to the Canopy Walk-a swing bridge 50 meters in length that is suspended from large trees; you will be able to see the amazing rainforest with a bird’s eye view, spotting wildlife moving below you. Proceed to check-in your booked lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight stay at Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel for mid-range option, Gisakura Visitors’ Centre for budget option/Nyungwe One and Only Hotel for luxury option

Day 3: Chimpanzee tracking and Isumo waterfalls trail

Enjoy breakfast and go for briefing about the endangered chimpanzees before entering the forest in search of the active and playful fellows in Nyungwe forest with your backpack. The Chimpanzees are much easier to spot as they jump from one tree to another, chattering and laughing. Chimpanzee tracking usually takes about 3-5 hours depending on their location. On finding them, spend an hour while taking pictures and videos.  Connect to visit Nyungwe’s biggest waterfalls on Isumo trail. This is one of the most refreshing experiences with sights of different birds and some primates. The walk is approximately 4 hours walking up and down the Nyungwe forest. Thereafter, return to your hotel for relaxation and good memories. Dinner and overnight stay at lodge as above

Day 4: Colobus monkeys tracking – Transfer to Volcanoes national park

After breakfast, follow the same procedure as of chimpanzee tracking, receive a briefing then enter the forest to search for the colobus monkey. These primates are quite different to spot as they keep jumping from tree to tree however, the park rangers will do their best to help you get the best view of the primates. This will take 2-5 hours and on finding them, you will be allowed to spend an hour in their presence. 

Thereafter, embark on your journey the Volcanoes national park. It’s a 6-7 hours’ drive with great sights of the Lake Kivu and Virunga Mountains and the forest. You can stop to take pictures keeping in mind the time. Upon arrival in Musanze, proceed to check-in your lodge, dinner and overnight stay at Hotel Muhabura for budget option/Le Bambou Gorilla lodge for mid-range option/Sabinyo Silverback Lodge for luxury option

Day 5: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes national park – Cultural tour 

After early morning breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters – Kinigi with your trekking gears, packed lunch and bottled drinking water. You will receive a briefing by the park ranger guides at 7:00 am about the experience. After the briefing, you will start your gorilla trekking journey accompanied by the ranger guides in search of the mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda takes 2 to 7 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas however; the guides will find them from where they were last seen the previous day! You will spend 1 hour with these gentle giants and later return to your lodge to refresh and relax as you savour the memories of your trek. 

Later afternoon/evening, connect to visit Iby’wacu Cultural Village-a Non-Profit umbrella organization that aims at improving the lives of reformed poachers and communities around Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park through provision of conservation incentives, supporting community enterprise development and livelihood based projects. It’s a rewarding place where you will be guided around the place as you enjoy the Kinyarwanda traditions including the Intore dance, traditional ceremonies and a guided community walk. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay at booked lodge as above

Day 6: 2nd Gorilla trekking experience/Dian Fossey Hike

Option 1: 2nd Gorilla trekking 

After breakfast, drive back to the park headquarters for your second gorilla trekking experience, you will follow the same procedures as of the previous day. However, you will be trekking a different gorilla family on this day. 

Option 2: Dian Fossey Hike

Breakfast will be served early and lunch will be packed and drive back to the park headquarters for briefing and go for Dian Fossey trekking to Karisoke. The trek is challenging and lasts 6 to 7 hours. After the hike, you will connect back to the lodge for dinner and overnight at as night before.

Day 7: Hike Mount Bisoke and cross to Uganda

On this day, you will either hike mount Bisoke or do a second gorilla trekking experience however, the second gorilla experience is not included in the quote below. It’s an optional activity. You will follow the same procedures provided as of the first gorilla trekking experience. 

You will enjoy breakfast and set out for Mount. Bisoke hike which is part of volcanoes national park. After briefing about hike with your hiking gears, set off for the hike. It’s a day hike through the steep slopes of the mountain. On reaching the summit, you will discover a beautiful crater lake and the whole experience is overwhelming! 

Meet your driver after descending to transfer to Kisoro. It’s a 2-3 hours’ drive crossing via Cyanika border. Upon arrival in the evening, check-in your booked lodge to relax, dinner and overnight stay at Lake Mulehe Safari lodge for Mid-range option/Travellers’ Rest Hotel for budget option/Gahinga Lodge/Lake Mutanda Safari Resort for Luxury 

Day 8: Golden Monkey tracking in Mgahinga national park – Bwindi forest 

After early morning breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for briefing from the park warden about the endangered golden monkeys. After connect to the tracking starting point and enter the forest to search for the rare golden monkey. This activity can take about 1-5 hours and is done at closer view of the other primates in the park like the red tailed monkeys, Vervet monkeys among other. After viewing the rare golden monkeys for an hour while taking pictures and studying their behaviours. 

Meet with your guide and transfer to one of the sectors of Bwindi impenetrable national park with en-route lunch. It’s a 2-3 hours’ drive depending on which Bwindi sector. Dinner and overnight stay at Bakiga lodge for budget option/ Buhoma Haven Lodge for mid-range option/Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp for luxury option 

Day 9: Gorilla trekking experience 

Have breakfast and transfer to park headquarters for briefing about gorilla trekking and at around 7:00 am, you will set off for the gorilla search. The search time for these apes is unpredictable but normally ranges between 2-8 hours depending on their movement. This activity takes you through the steep rocks climbing up and down making it tiresome but in an adventurous way. However, after encountering these humble giant primates for 1 hour, the memories of how tough it was to get to them are erased. Descend and meet your driver to return to the lodge.

Day 10: Bamboo Trail

Option 1 – Bamboo Trail

Hiking through the Bamboo Trail takes 7 hours and involves climbing a steep area of up to the highest point in Rwamunyonyi hill at 2607 meters above sea level.  As you hike using this trail, you will encounter different vegetation and plant species that include the Bamboo forest with over 14 different plant species until when you reach the Afro-montane vegetation zone.  During this trail, you will encounter different birds and plant species. The view point of this trail (top of Rwamunyonyi Hill) rewards hikers with spectacular view of Lake Bunyonyi and the breathtaking views of the Virunga Volcanoes and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This is one of the mind-boggling trails and worth your time and effort. Since this trail is conducted from Ruhija sector/area yet it is about one hour from Buhooma, visitors are always advised to stay in Ruhija sector so that they can connect easily and faster for the activity.

Option 2: Ivy River Trail

The Ivy River Trail is a full day’s walk with the most fascinating experiences and is conducted through an old road in the Jungles. While on this trail, you can encounter several mammal species including bush pigs, several primate species, bird and butterfly species and also some of the local community members while from the market. The trail usually takes 6-7 hours. The start of the trail can be from Nkuringo or Buhoma sectors. Following a murram road downhill as you rewarded with breath-taking views for about 7kms and turn right to Ivy River. It is 2-3 hours walking from the Nkuringo Park headquarters to the Ivy River, while from this River to Buhoma as you walk through the forest takes approximately 4 hours hence total walking time is about 6 hours. This trail is commonly used by the local community members when travelling to or from Nkuringo especially during market days to the Nteko Village. Dinner and overnight stay at Buhoma Haven Lodge for mid-range option/Buhom Community Rest Camp for budget option

Day 10: Choose one – Mubwindi swamp trail, Muzabajiro Loop trail, Munyanga waterfall train and Transfer to Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth national park 

Option 1 – Mubwindi swamp trail

This 4-5 hours fantastic trail goes along a path in the jungles and slopes/descends through the magical rainforest with breath-taking viewpoints along the way of rich valleys and the Virunga massif. While on the Mubwindi Swamp trail, you are likely to encounter some primates especially the monkeys, numerous bird species, forest elephants, luckily even the mountain gorillas and the bush pigs because majority of those wildlife are found within this area of the Forest. 

Option 2 – Muzabajiro Loop Trail

This 3-4 hours trail rewards you with the most beautiful view because it involves walking through the forest, and climbing to Rukubira Hill where you enjoy the fantastic view of the Virunga Mountains Massif, Buhoma areas of Bwindi Impenetrable forest and the western rift Valley below.

Later afternoon, transfer to Queen Elizabeth national park. It’s a 4-5 hours’ drive from Buhoma sector with en-route lunch. Dinner and overnight stay at Enjojo Game lodge for budget / Ishasha Jingle Lodge for mid-range option

Day 11: Ishasha morning game drive – Boat cruise along the Kazinga channel

After breakfast, meet your guide for a morning game drive around Ishasha area for chances of seeing the tree climbing lions. It is not guaranteed to see the lions on tree branches however; the drive will do his best. 

After lunch, connect for your boat cruise experience along the Kazinga channel and into Lake Edward. This cruise will let you pass through a place of the highest concentration of hippos and you may also see many animals drinking at the water’s edge. The cruise also offers a good platform for photography, bird watching, and game viewing. Dinner and overnight at Pumba Safari Cottages for budget option/ Parkview Safari lodge for mid-range option

Day 12: Morning game drive in Kasenyi area – Transfer to Kibale national park 

Early in the morning after breakfast, you will enjoy a game drive in search for early risers in the Kasenyi area. This area has the highest population of animals such as lions, antelopes, leopards, buffaloes, elephants, waterbuck, Uganda Kob and other types of antelopes.

After the game drive, transfer to Kibale forest national park which is about 3 hours’ drive from Queen Elizabeth national park with en-route lunch in Fort portal town. Proceed for a nature walk in the Bigodi swamp. Take a walk to the Bigodi sanctuary for plenty of bird species plus the rare flora and fauna. Thereafter, connect to your booked lodge for dinner and overnight stay at Chimpanzee Guesthouse Cottages for mid-range option/Main house for budget option

Day 13: Chimpanzee Habituation experience 

Wake up very early, enjoy your breakfast and set off to the park headquarters with your trekking gears, packed lunch and water. Meet with other trekkers and gather for a briefing from the park officials where you will be guided on the expectations. Thereafter in only a group of 6 people and ranger guides/researchers, set off for chimpanzee habituation experience. This is a full day activity were you will visit a semi-habituated chimpanzee group that in the process of habituation. These chimpanzees are usually difficult to find because they keep running away however the researchers will find them and allow you to spend 4 in their presence. Return to meet your safari guide and receiving your certificate and drive back to your lodge; dinner will be serve and overnight stay at lodge as above

Day 14: Transfer to Murchison falls national park 

After early morning breakfast, embark on your journey to Murchison falls national park. It’s a long drive taking about 7-8 hours with en-route stops to refresh and lunch. Upon arrival in the park late afternoon, connect to your booked lodge for dinner and overnight stay at Pakuba Safari lodge for mid-range/Heriatge Safari Lodge for budget option

Day 15: Morning game drive and boat cruise – Hike to the top of the falls

Have breakfast and then head for a morning game drive in the delta area, explore some of the wildlife in the park on a game drive such as the jackals, hyenas, giraffe, lion, elephant, antelope, elephant, Uganda Kob, Jackson hartebeests, buffaloes among others.

After lunch, connect for a boat cruise on the River Nile. Cruise to the bottom of the falls where you will find animals like the hippos, buffaloes, elephants, crocodiles, and variety of water birds like on a good day you may see the rare shoebill, fish eagles, among others. Thereafter, you will hike to the top of the falls and find different viewpoints of the mighty Murchison falls, meet your driver at the top of the falls to drive back to your lodge for relax with en-route evening game drive. Dinner and overnight at lodge as above

Day 16: Rhino tracking – Kampala/Entebbe 

After early morning breakfast, meet your guide to start your journey to Ziwa rhino sanctuary. It’s a 3-4 hours’ drive from Murchison falls national park with en-route drive through the Budongo forest with en-route lunch in Masindi town, Proceed for a 2-3 hours’ rhino trekking experience. You will be briefed about the rhinos and guided by the rangers to trek the rhinos on foot.

Thereafter, proceed to connect to Entebbe. Check-in your booked lodge for dinner and overnight stay at ViaVia Guest house for budget option/ 2 Friends Gueshouse for mid-range option

Day 17: Fly to Nairobi – Transfer to Naivasha national park – Visit Hell’s gate 

Depending on your flight schedule to Nairobi, transfer to Entebbe airport for your morning flight to Nairobi. Upon arrival in Nairobi, meet and greet with our company representative who will also be your safari guide. Thereafter, transfer to Naivasha national park. It’s about 4-5 hours’ drive with en-route scenery. Upon arrival in the park connect to Naivasha Sopa Lodge, check-in and have for lunch. 

Later afternoon, visit Crescent Island Game Sanctuary – a peninsula or island on the eastern side of Lake Naivasha. A short boat trip from the mainland out into Lake Naivasha gives you access to the unique Crescent Island Wildlife Sanctuary which hosts giraffes, waterbucks, elands, wildebeests, zebras and impalas. It is also a haven for more than 200 species of birds. The lake has a lot of hippos which you can easily spot from the island. Among the resident birds are fish eagles, ospreys, lily-trotters, black crakes and a variety of herons. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay at Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge 

Day 18: Visit the Hell’s gate park and the gorge on a bicycle – Transfer to Masai Mara national reserve 

After breakfast, drive to entrance of Hell’s gate park, enjoy the impressive landscape as you drive through the semi-arid world with sheer rugged cliffs, open plains, and deep concealed gorges. Explore the gorge on a bicycle. Other optional activities include; bird watching, rock climbing and trekking through the gorge among the geysers. 

Later after lunch, transfer to Masai Mara national reserve, it’s a 4 hours’ drive arriving late afternoon, connect to check-in your booked lodge in Masai Mara. Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Simba Lodge for mid-range option/AA Mara lodges for budget option

Day 19: Full day in Masai Mara

After breakfast, full day in the park with packed lunch in search of its popular residents, The Masai Mara plains are full of wildebeest during migration season early July to end September however, they are not guaranteed to view, zebra, impala, topi, giraffe, Thomson’s gazelle are regularly seen, leopards, lions, hyenas, cheetah, jackal and bat-eared foxes. Black rhino are a little shy and hard to spot but are often seen at a distance if you are lucky. Hippos are abundant in the Mara River as are very large Nile crocodiles, which lay in wait for a meal as the wildebeest cross on their annual quest to find new pastures. Later Meals and overnight at lodge as above

Day 20: Full day Masai mara 

Early morning breakfast and enter the gates of Masai Mara on day of the 30 Days Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, & Tanzania Safari for a game drive that will get you quite close to different wildlife species in big numbers. From solitary buffaloes to copulating lions, birds and small game of all types; you will see it all on a game drive in Masai Mara! Return to the lodge for lunch and relax from the scorching sun. In the evening, go for another game drive. Dinner and overnight at lodge as above

Day 21: Transfer to Amboseli national park 

After breakfast, check-out of the lodge, you will be met by your guide to drive to Amboseli national park. It’s a 6-7 hours’ drive with en-route lunch. Amboseli national park is famous for its scenery with a close view of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, which dominates the landscape, and open plains. 

Arrive at late afternoon with more game drive as you drive to your lodge. Animals like the well-known predators and their opponents like the Zebra, Wildebeest, Giraffe, Hippo with a view of Mt Kilimanjaro may be spotted. Later Dinner and overnight at Sentrim Amboseli lodge for mid-range/ Amboseli Eco-camp for budget

Day 22: Full day game drive – Amboseli national park 

Have breakfast and explore Amboseli. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants among other wildlife species. Other attraction of the park includes opportunities to meet the Maasai people and also offers spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Dinner and overnight stay at lodge as above

Day 23; Transfer to Lake Manyara national park via Namanga border – Masia Village visit 

Breakfast will be served early and depart for Namanga border where your Tanzanian guide will be waiting for you. 

Transfer to Lake Manyara via Arusha for en-route lunch. Proceed to Lake Manyara national park. It’s about 2-3 hours’ drive. Visit the Masai Village before you proceed to your booked lodge. Dinner and overnight stay at Lake Manyara Tortils Camp for mid-range/ Eileen’s Trees Inn for budget option

Day 24: Game drive and Nature walk – Transfer to Tarangire national park

After morning breakfast, enjoy the morning game in search for animals like the tree-climbing lions. The most sited habitats are: Elephants, Lions, Giraffes, Zebras, Baboons and others. Take a nature walk in the park. Have lunch and transfer to Tarangire national park. It’s about 1 hour drive with ne-route evening game drive before you continue to your booked lodge for dinner and overnight stay at Sangaiwe Tented lodge for budget option/ Tarangire Roika lodge for mid-range

Day 25: Full day Game drive – Tarangire national park

Wake up early enjoy the morning breakfast then embark on a game drive in Tarangire national park with an amazing sights of different animals if possible. Dinner and overnight stay at lodge as above 

Day 26:  Transfer to Serengeti national park – evening game drive 

After breakfast on day 28 of the 30 Days Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, & Tanzania Safari, transfer to Serengeti national park. On arrival at the park, en-route an afternoon game drive. Day 27: Full day in Serengeti national park

After your delicious breakfast, meet your driver and embark on a drive to Serengeti national park with your panic lunch. The central sector is known for its masculine lions and you will also encounter a great number of other wildlife. Later afternoon, you will drive to Central Serengeti for game drive. In this area of the park, you will have opportunity to see big prides of lions, Cheetahs, Leopards, Hyenas, Giraffes, Elephants, different Antelopes and other wildlife. Later in the evening return to your lodge for dinner and overnight at either lodge as above

Day 28: Another day in Serengeti national park

After breakfast, you will drive to Central Serengeti for game drive for yet another game drive. This area has a lot of animals to explore at your disposal with your picnic lunch. In this area of the park, you will have opportunity to see big prides of lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, giraffes, elephants, different antelopes and other wildlife. Late afternoon after your full day game drive, return to your lodge as above

Day 29: Full day at Ngorongoro crater 

Wake up early, have breakfast and transfer to Ngorongoro conservation area where you will connect to Ngorongoro crater with your picnic lunch for a full day of game drive in the crater. The crater has a good number of Lions and Cheetahs, and it is another good place to see the rare black Rhino. In the late afternoon, visit a Masai village and enjoy the cultural experience before you connect to your lodge for check-in dinner and overnight stay at Eileen’s Trees Inn for budget option/Ngorongoro Serena lodge for mid-range option

Day 30: Transfer to Arusha /Fly to Zanzibar

Depending on the available flight schedule to Zanzibar, you will either fly directly from Ngorongoro to Zanzibar or drive to Arusha and connect to a flight to Zanzibar. That will be the End of the 30 Days Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, & Tanzania Safari.
